Professor Vivien Goldman has taught at  the Clive Davis Institute
since 2006. She has also initiated and taught courses  on Punk, Bob
Marley, Reggae and Dub and  right now, is teaching about Fela Kuti,
the legendary Nigerian activist creator of the Afrobeat sound,
currently being celebrated in the “Fela! Musical”. A Londoner, she is
known as a writer, broadcaster post-punk musician, and author of five
books, including two on Bob Marley (“The Book of Exodus,” Three Rivers
Press/Random House,)

Goldman brings a unique perspective to this  course. A founding
member of prototypical synth-pop new wave combo, The Flying Lizards,
and dubmaster Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound Possee, Goldman has
co-written tracks for artists including Massive Attack, Coldcut,
Berlin uber-producer Moritz von Oswald, Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic
Orchestra) and Luscious Jackson’s Jill Cunniff, and is part of the
infamous European Chicks on Speed art/music collective. Her solo 45,
Launderette, co-produced with PiL’s John Lydon, is frequently
re-issued on compilations like “Anti NY” and “Disco! Not Disco,” and
was sampled by MadLib as”Filthy,” on his “Beat Konducta” series.
