Most Overlooked Album 2012 Meshell Ndegeocello “Pour Une Ame Souveraine: A Dedication To Nina Simone”
Got my hands on this album way too late. And I can’t stop listening to it! This is singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello’s 1oth album (Really!!!) and probably her best-to-date. Pour Une Ame Souveraine, a tribute album to the late Nina Simone, has more than done the lady of soul justice. “Simone is our people’s Bach,” says Ndegeocello. “She is the foundation for making popular music interesting and her activist side makes her a heroine to us”. There is not a bad track on here. Sensual soul, pop and funk with mellifluous orchestral are the sweet ingredients here. Featuring collaborations with Sinéad O’Connor, Lizz Wright, Cody ChesnuTT, and the intense track House of the Rising Sun, feat. Toshi Reagon, I can’t believe that this masterpiece of an album came and went hardly noticed. Available now at Amazon!
