BURLESQUE by Luke Solomon by Oki-Ni on Mixcloud

One of the unsung heroes of British house music, self-proclaimed music freak Luke Solomon present a mix that charts the influences of his new side project, Mother Rose, from The Dead Weather to Captain Beefheart.

A man of many monikers, Luke stated his DJ career in the early-90s and established himself early on as a connoisseur of all things vinyl. After setting up Classic Recordings with fellow MIX SERIES contributor Derrick Carter, he went on to mastermind a string of other acclaimed projects including Freaks, and now Mother Rose.

A collaboration with Howlin’ Wilf’s Andy Neal, Mother Rose is a vinyl only project that explores the duos shared loved of Tom Waits, Talking Heads, and The Rolling Stones in a typically inventive way. Their version of Paint it Black from Mother Rose #1, for example, saw the duo recording vocals through a toy microphone, before passing it through an array of pedals and filters to achieve an unique and haunting vocal.

Luke describes this mix as “a series of songs that inspired the making of Mother Rose. From outright dirty to downright odd…” and it certainly lives up to the billing.
