She could give you 12 thousand roses, like I did, repeats London singer/songwriter Elle on “Roses,” a lonesome sliver of a song that rolls hi-hats over quietly bubbling tones like dice across a table. In this simple yet striking video by House of Alt, Elle sings from beneath a rose crown and, at one point, begins chewing the petals off one stem with a vampiric look in her eye (that’ll be the contact lenses). It’s all over in a flash, but the hurt yet proud tone in Elle’s voice lingers in the memory.
“For me ‘Roses’ is about feelings that aren’t reciprocated,” Elle told The FADER. “To give someone something really precious and beautiful and not get anything back.
