Trans Woman Chayviss “Chay” Darice Reed Murdered in Florida

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives were looking for the killer of Chayviss “Chay” Darice Reed, who was shot dead on Friday in Miami-Dade County’s West Little River neighborhood.

Reed, 28, died in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 93rd Street. She was born a boy, grew up in Carol City and Opa-locka and graduated from American Senior High School in Hialeah.

On Saturday, her friends and relatives remembered her courage and sense of humor when she challenged the norms and came out as transgender.

Reed’s social media profiles said she loved the Oscar-winning film “Moonlight” and was passionate about spoken word, fashion and cosmetology.

On Facebook, her friends Di’Angelis Brookins and Alexis Smith described her as “so sweet,” and Kendra Lockhart said she was a “good person.”

“My heart is so broken … we have lost such a wonderful person,” Lizleime  Fernandez wrote.

Detectives have yet to say if she was the target of the shooting. Transgender people are at a higher risk of homicide than other members of the LGBTQ community, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.

Reed is the ninth transgender woman in the nation to become the victim of a homicide this year, according to The Advocate, a magazine that covers the LGBTQ community.

Detectives were asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. (via local10)
