Lopez\u2019s seminal works, which adorned the pages of Vogue, The New York Times, Women\u2019s Wear Daily, and Interview throughout the 1970\u2019s and 1980\u2019s,<br \/>\nremain a powerful source of inspiration, galvanizing contemporary visual culture through a variety of disciplines including fine art, digital media, and fashion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0_Rgi3MC8Ak\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in the 1960\u2019s, Lopez redefined fashion imagery with his portrayal of the \u201cAntonio<br \/>\nGirls,\u201d comprised most notably of Pat Cleveland, Jane Forth, Jerry Hall, Grace Jones, and Jessica Lange. His\u00a0infectiously charismatic persona and Pygmalion\u2019s eye for raw beauty led Antonio, and the equally magnetic<br \/>\nart director, Juan Ramos, to discover and transform these aspiring models into paragons of glamour.<br \/>\nInspired by his muses, contemporary culture, and a diverse range of historical and artistic movements, Lopez<br \/>\nforged a diverse body of work rendered in pencil, ink, charcoal, watercolor, and film. His ability to convey<br \/>\nthe human form &#8211; and the couture that ornamented it- with flourish and mastery inspired the creation of<br \/>\ndrawings, ranging from classical, surrealistic, abstract, pop, and urban. The celebrity coterie that surrounded him<br \/>\nduring his Paris years became the subjects of his drawings and photographs. The iconic Instamatics and<br \/>\nPolaroids of Divine, Paloma Picasso, Yves Saint Laurent, among many others remain powerful works of<br \/>\nphotography and important cultural records of a time of exuberant creative productivity and consumption. By<br \/>\nthe time Lopez returned to New York City in the late 1970\u2019s, he was a celebrated name inspiring designers<br \/>\nsuch as Norma Kamali and Anna Sui. By the 1980\u2019s, he led commercial campaigns for prestigious brands such as<br \/>\nYSL, Valentino, Missoni, and Versace.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19413\" title=\"antonio lopez 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zeitgeistworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/antonio-lopez-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"538\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Antonio\u2019s World, the first comprehensive exhibition of Lopez\u2019s work in New York since 2001, will present a<br \/>\nselection of Antonio\u2019s most iconic pieces created from the 1960\u2019s through his death in 1987. The work will<br \/>\nbe displayed in an immersive installation conceptualized by Rafael de C\u00e1rdenas, founder of the progressive<br \/>\ndesign firm Architecture at Large. Before opening his firm, C\u00e1rdenas spent three years working as a men\u2019s<br \/>\ncollection designer at Calvin Klein and, in 2011, he was appointed to Baccarat\u2019s inaugural Board of<br \/>\nAdvisors. His fashion background remains an influence in his approach to design.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19414\" title=\"antonio-lopez3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zeitgeistworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/antonio-lopez3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"513\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first complete Antonio Lopez monograph, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rizzoliusa.com\/book.php?isbn=9780847837922\">Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex, and Disco<\/a>, will be released by<br \/>\nRizzoli New York in conjunction with the exhibition. Written by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha, with a<br \/>\nforward by Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley and epilogue by Anna Sui, the monograph will showcase Lopez\u2019s iconic works,<br \/>\nincluding never before seen Instamatic photos, Polaroids, letters, and ephemera. Likewise, Twin Palms<br \/>\nPublishers has recently released Instamatics: Antonio Lopez, a survey of Lopez\u2019s Polaroids, co-edited by<br \/>\nPaul Caranicas and Jack Woody.<br \/>\n<strong><em>ABOUT ANTONIO LOPEZ<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAntonio Lopez was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1943. He moved to New York City as a small child and<br \/>\nstudied at the Fashion Institute of Technology before dropping out to pursue an internship at Women\u2019s Wear<br \/>\nDaily, launching a flourishing career in the art and fashion industries. His work has been exhibited at The<br \/>\nFashion Institute of Technology (1988), The Louvre (1994), Royal College of Art, London (1997), the<br \/>\nSmithsonian Institute (2001), Design Museum London (2010), Society of Illustrators in association with the<br \/>\nLeslie Lohman Gay Art Foundation (2011), and recently at the Mus\u00e9e des Arts Decoratifs Palais du Louvre and<br \/>\nthe Victoria &amp; Albert Museum (2011-2012).
