Elaine Stritch<\/b>\u00a0(February 2, 1925 \u2013 July 17, 2014) was an\u00a0American actress<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0singer<\/a>, best known for her work on\u00a0Broadway<\/a>. She has appeared in numerous stage plays and musicals, feature films, and many television programs. She was inducted into the\u00a0American Theater Hall of Fame<\/a>\u00a0in 1995.<\/p>\n

Stritch made her professional stage debut in 1944 and her Broadway debut in the comedy\u00a0Loco<\/i>\u00a0in 1946. Notable Broadway credits include her\u00a0Tony Award<\/a>\u00a0nominated roles in the original production of\u00a0William Inge<\/a>‘s 1955 play\u00a0Bus Stop<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0No\u00ebl Coward<\/a>‘s 1961 musical\u00a0Sail Away<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Stephen Sondheim<\/a>‘s 1970 musical\u00a0Company<\/a><\/i>, which includes her performance of the song “The Ladies Who Lunch”, the 1996 revival of the\u00a0Edward Albee<\/a>\u00a0playA Delicate Balance<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and her 2001\u00a0Tony Award<\/a>\u00a0winning one-woman show\u00a0Elaine Stritch at Liberty<\/i>.<\/p>\n

In the 1970s, she relocated to London, starring in several\u00a0West End<\/a>\u00a0productions, including\u00a0Tennessee Williams<\/a>‘Small Craft Warnings<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 1973 and the\u00a0Neil Simon<\/a>\u00a0play\u00a0The Gingerbread Lady<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 1974. She also starred withDonald Sinden<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0ITV<\/a>\u00a0sitcom\u00a0Two’s Company<\/a><\/i>, which ran from 1975 to 1979 and earned her a\u00a0BAFTA TV Award<\/a>\u00a0nomination.<\/p>\n

She won an\u00a0Emmy Award<\/a>\u00a0in 1993 for her guest role on\u00a0Law & Order<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and another in 2004 for the television documentary of her one woman show.
