Joan Rivers has died at the age of 81.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Known by her stage name\u00a0Joan Rivers<\/b>, was an American actress, comedian, writer, producer and television host, best known for her stand-up comedy, for co-hosting the\u00a0E!<\/a>\u00a0celebrity fashion show\u00a0Fashion Police<\/a><\/i>, and for starring in the reality seriesJoan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?<\/a><\/i>\u00a0alongside her daughter\u00a0Melissa Rivers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rivers first came to prominence in 1965 as a guest on\u00a0The Tonight Show<\/a><\/i>, a pioneering late-night program with interviews and comedy, hosted by\u00a0Johnny Carson<\/a>, whom she acknowledges as her mentor. The show established her particular comic style, poking fun at celebrities, but also at herself, often joking about her extensive plastic surgery. When she launched a rival program,\u00a0The Late Show<\/a><\/i>, he never spoke to her again.<\/p>\n

She went on to host a successful daytime slot,\u00a0The Joan Rivers Show<\/i>, which won her a\u00a0Daytime Emmy<\/a>\u00a0for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Her\u00a0satirical<\/a>\u00a0style of humor, however, by focusing on the personal lives of celebrities and public figures, has sometimes been criticized.<\/p>\n

She was also the author of 12 best-selling\u00a0memoir<\/a>\u00a0and humor books, as well as providing comic material for stage and television.<\/p>\n
