A gay man says he was brutally attacked by another passenger in a hate crime late Friday on a Chicago Transit Authority train.<\/p>\n

Ryan McCarthy\u00a0(above)\u00a0says\u00a0the other passenger attacked him after he sat down next to the man on\u00a0the\u00a0train on CTA\u2019s Red Line, pushing him out of his seat and onto the floor.<\/p>\n

\"ScreenAfter McCarthy stood\u00a0up, the man began punching him in the face and didn\u2019t stop until other passengers formed a barrier between them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t touch him, didn\u2019t look at him, didn\u2019t make eye contact. That\u2019s why it was such a huge surprise to me,\u201d McCarthy told NBC Channel 5<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt was so hateful, such a hate crime.\u00a0All I did was sit next to this passenger on this train. Immediately he pushed me off and started punching me in the face. So unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCarthy managed to capture a photo of the suspect (right) on his cell phone before the man got off the train at Clark\/Division.<\/p>\n

Van Sewell, who witnessed the incident from a few seats over, said he was\u00a0\u201cscared for myself and everyone else on the train.\u201d<\/p>\n

CTA issued a statement saying although assaults on its trains are \u201cextremely rare,\u201d it takes them \u201cvery seriously.\u201d CTA and the Chicago Police Department\u00a0are investigating.<\/p>\n
