Back in the 80s, believe it or not, there was a HUGE gay revolution, years after Stonewall. Not unlike today, there was a republican president by the name of Ronald Reagan<\/strong> who many say did not do enough for the LGBT community, specifically during the AIDS crisis. In the UK, Prime Minister<\/strong>\u00a0Margaret Thatcher<\/strong>, aka The Iron Lady, helped create\u00a0Section 28<\/a>, prohibiting local authorities from “promoting” homosexuality or gay “pretended family relationships”, and prevented councils spending money on educational materials and projects perceived to promote a gay lifestyle. And of course,\u00a0Pope John Paul II<\/strong> had the church remove all support from gay Catholic organizations. But through it all, the gay community stayed united…and leading the way were some out, loud and proud artists\/musicians that flaunted their gayness with aplomb, resisting hatred and discrimination… proving that the best way to protest hate is to get your queer in gear, and boogie!<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a cool, Hi-NRG\u00a0playlist that played on HEAVY rotation back-in-the-day at Backstreet<\/strong> nightclub in Detroit, Michigan. This was the soundtrack to an era that got many queens through some dark days, when equal rights, love and acceptance was all we wanted and deserved! (It\u2019s just a few\u2026sorry if your fave ain\u2019t there\u2026LOL)<\/p>\n
