AMAZING Grammy Award-winning singer, dancer, actress and activist, Lena Horne<\/strong>, born June 30, 1917, spent over\u00a070 years appearing in film, television, and theater. In\u00a01933, Horne joined the chorus line of the Cotton Club<\/strong> in New York City.\u00a0She made her debut at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Panama Hattie<\/em> (1942) and performed the title song of Stormy Weather<\/strong>, based loosely on the life of jazz singer\u00a0Adelaide Hall<\/strong><\/a>. She appeared in a number of MGM musicals, most notably Cabin in the Sky<\/strong> (1943), but was never featured in a leading role because of her race and the fact that her films had to be re-edited for showing in cities where theaters would not show films with black performers.\u00a0She was blacklisted during the 1950s for her affiliations in the 1940s with communist-backed groups.\u00a0After leaving Hollywood, Horne established herself as one of the premier nightclub performers of the post-war era. At the end of the 90s, Horne released another studio album, entitled Being Myself.<\/strong> Thereafter, Horne retired from performing and largely retreated from public view.<\/p>\n
