Banner&#8217;s death marks the 20th transgender person\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/transgender\/2017\/8\/16\/these-are-trans-people-killed-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murdered this year<\/a>; at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 trans people<\/a>\u00a0were killed in all of 2016. Most of the victims this year and last have been trans women of color.<\/p>\n<p>Montavious Sanchez Berry, the 18-year-old suspect, was\u00a0arrested later that day. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, he has been charged with Banner&#8217;s murder, as well as armed robbery and shooting into an occupied vehicle. This has been his third arrest in two years. He was previously charged with possession of marijuana paraphernalia, resisting an officer, and\u00a0possession\u00a0of an open container of an alcoholic beverage on government property, which a trial is currently pending for. Berry was also arrested for marijuana possession and intent to distribute last year, but those charges were dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>Banner was found by police dead\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/article172784766.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during Hurricane Irma<\/a>\u00a0around\u00a0northwest Charlotte in the 1400 block of Rosetta Street, not far from the Northwest School of the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous news sources have\u00a0misgendered\u00a0Derricka Banner, and reported the victim<a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/north-carolina\/charlotte\/man-fatally-shot-inside-car-charlotte-early-tuesday-cmpd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a>as male.
