Mahalia Jackson<\/b>, born October 26, 1911, best\u00a0<\/b>known as the Queen of Gospel<\/em>, is one of the most lauded singers ever; as well as an activist and TV personality.\u00a0Her recording of Move On Up a Little Higher<\/em> was a major hit. It\u00a0became the highest selling gospel single in history. She worked with artists like Duke Ellington<\/strong> and Thomas A. Dorsey<\/strong> and also sang at the 1963 March on Washington at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1959, Jackson appeared in the film Imitation of Life<\/em>. By the end of the decade, much of Jackson\u2019s work featured crossover production styles; she was an international figure, with a performance itinerary that included singing at President John F. Kennedy\u2019s<\/strong> inauguration.<\/p>\n

Jackson was also an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. She sang at the March on Washington<\/strong> at the request of her friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963, performing I Been Buked and I Been Scorned<\/a>. In 1966, she published her autobiography Movin\u2019 On Up<\/a>. After King’s death in 1968, Jackson sang at his funeral and then largely withdrew from public political activities.
