\u201cI\u2019ve been doing drag for just under three years, and I first moved to New York for college where I\u2019m currently studying fashion editorial styling at Parsons. My drag name comes from all of the women in past pop culture that I grew up idolizing. The \u2018Atomic\u2019 in my name comes from a comic called\u00a0Atomic Blonde<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0I grew up reading, about a female assassin and spy from the 80s\u2026and the \u2018Annie\u2019 comes from none other than\u00a0Annie Lennox<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Eurythmics<\/a><\/strong>. When I first googled Atomic Annie, just out of curiosity, it turned out that it was the nickname for a military weapon used during the 80s and I guess it just stuck.<\/p>

If I had to boil it down, I\u2019d say my drag aesthetic lives on the corner of punk and runway, with a lot of references heavily leaning on the women of the 1980s like\u00a0Grace Jones<\/strong>,\u00a0Debbie Harry<\/strong>,\u00a0Vivienne<\/strong>\u00a0Westwood<\/strong>, and any Bond Girls of the era. For me, drag is this super cathartic aspect of my life. Doing drag has allowed me to come to terms with what feels right for me in terms of gender identity and expression, while also giving me the ability to fuse my two greatest passions: fashion and queer art. As a hairy queen, I love subverting people\u2019s expectations of what gender can look like, and what a femme person can make you feel. I felt a lot of stigma being so hairy and so femme and flamboyant growing up\u2026 and felt like In order to really come to terms with the feelings I\u2019d internalized growing up, drag helped me take up space as a fusion of all the things I was told I couldn\u2019t really express simultaneously. It\u2019s all actually pretty punk if you think about it.\u201d<\/p>
