Laurel Charleston

Age: 24

Location: Brooklyn, New York

About:

“Laurel Charleston is a high fashion and avant-garde drag queen redefining makeup art across the world. Laurel’s known for her vibrant colors, extreme precision, and out-of-this-world creativity; from turning her face into a Monet classic or dramatically transforming into one of Basquiat’s most iconic works, Laurel is showing the world that a makeup look can go far beyond a cut crease or smokey eye…and enter the world of fine art.

I’ve always had a different approach to makeup. When I first got started, five years ago, I was never content with just being a ‘pretty’ queen. I constantly longed to explore what could lay beyond a very ‘binary’ idea of drag and did so immediately. I would experiment with color theory, geometric patterns, and even replicating 2-dimensional shapes onto my face…and at the same time, I was discovering a lot about my own identity. It was during this period of experimentation that I realized and began to understand that I am non-binary and transgender. Makeup helped me experiment, heal, and take refuge. It led me to discover integral parts of my identity and to this day it still does. These experiences have created a resilient bond between myself and my makeup work and because of that I am inspired every day to create.”
