London Swings with V.V. Brown

Hometown: London, UK.

Vanessa Brown, aged 24 is one of those Londonites of ‘now’, you know the type, those really annoyingly talented ones that can’t stick to one forte, (they insist on making us all look lazy) call it ADD or talent, she’s already renowned for her singer/songwriter/performer/multi-instrumentalist/producer-shizzle, and with more /’s than a Halloween movie she’s a pop star in control!

Her sound has to be a first, 50’s retro-pop mixed with 8-bit samples and more soda-pop novelties than you can fit in a Mini Cooper. It all seems to stem from an upbringing spoon-fed on The Rolling Stones, Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley, Queen and the music booming out from her Nintendo. Indeed, even when she wasn’t super-glued to Super Mario she was singing in her local gospel choir.

She confesses that “I’ve always felt slightly on the edge of the circle,” which must be true as she’s defiantly floating well above the sea of clichéd pop stars currently projectile vomiting their way out of prime time TV. In fact, just her sheer energy and theatrical animation sets her strides apart from the pre-mentioned villains of today’s music industry.

In contrast to this Yoshi-like energy, and her up-tempo melodies, the lyrics on her debut album are a tale of Vanessa’s first love, or rather the pain of her first love. Her first single Crying Blood (Out Now!) is a perfect example of her penchant for mixing heartfelt pop with that feeling of car-crash despair we’ve all felt after the collapse of a relationship.
V.V. Brown has been signed to none other than Island Records, so expect to hear more and more from our multi-slashed songstress.
