Dorothy Jean Dandridge, born November 8, 1922, sang at Harlem’s Cotton Club and Apollo Theatre and became the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress in Carmen Jones. Many years passed before the mainstream entertainment industry acknowledged Dandridge’s legacy. In 1999, Halle Berry played Dandridge in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. (via Biography)
