Age: 21

Location: Paris, France & Toronto, Ontario

About:

“A bit about me…I’m a self-taught drag artist, originally from Toronto. Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup; so I watched a lot of people doing drag on YouTube…and through channels like Nowness, became really obsessed with artists like Sussi (Oliver Hartt) and Sun Wai Kin– who’s drag at the time was like nothing I had seen before. I started sneaking my way into drag shows downtown and offering to help in any way I could, just so I could be in the environment and learn some of the tricks. When I finally moved out, I wanted to try my hand at drag. The issue was that I was in a suburb of Paris where I wasn’t able to perform, so my drag was heavily focused on makeup which was the only thing accessible to me there.

There was one shop that sold hair and makeup with 2€ eyeshadows and I would go every day after school and pick one to do a look with. My stuff, in the beginning, was horrid ’cause the products didn’t work at all, but it’s my favorite time to look back on because it is the most fun to remember.

I got good at hiding mistakes with other materials like yarn and leaves and trash I would pick up off the road in the morning if I thought it was pretty. I wanted so badly to say something with my makeup. I would do anything to make it work; and to me now, that’s what the essence of drag really is. When I moved back home during the pandemic, I got real makeup and really into storytelling. I started to do a couple looks in one picture; and because all the fabric stores shut down, I taught myself how to body paint in place of costumes, which I honestly prefer now.

Basically, my drag is trial and error, making it work without making it obvious how long it took to get to a finished product.

Everything about the world of drag is brilliant in the dumbest way possible and I feel really grateful to have not only found it but to have found a place in it.”
