About:

“How’s your head…piece?

I used to think that to be a drag queen, you had to wear wigs. If you’re not wearing a wig, you’re not doing drag (as a very famous saying goes 👀). My issue was, the good wigs cost a lot of money. I tried to learn wig styling, but it really wasn’t for me. Plus, looking like every other drag queen with basically the same hair wasnt attractive to me. I want to stand out and I wanted to make everything myself. Which is where I got the idea of creating headpieces.

Creating headpieces came somewhat naturally, as I was quite good with my hands (not like that…you perv!). I love the idea of creating something out of nothing…

so, would try to make cool pieces out of everyday objects using ropes, paper clips, toilet rolls, and bin bags just to name a few.

It really was a great way for me to utilise my creative juices. I even produced camp, af headpieces that replicated everyday objects including a cigarette, a mop, a carrot… the list goes on!

This is pretty juxtaposed (we love a big fancy word) with, what I like to call, cunty make up. I dunno. I’m quite entertained by the idea of having a fierce drag face while wearing a pair of self-standing jeans on your head, but that’s just me.

Johanna Bang ultimately is a headpiece drag artist who wants to make a fashionable but camp impression on the world. I want to drive home the message that you don’t need to spend a sh*t tone of money on wigs to stand out (although it might help). You can create something big, loud, and cool with materials you can find at a supermarket or charity shop.”
